Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

Explanation

IRC - What is it and how does it work?

IRC is a way of communicating with people from all over the world in real time. It is made up of separate networks of servers. These servers are computers that allow users to connect to IRC.

Usually, to connect to IRC, the user would run a program called a "client". The client would connect to a network via a server. It is the servers job to relay information to and from other servers on the same network.

Once connected, the user would normally join one or more "channels" and "chat" with other users there. These conversations may be private (between two users only, or public (where everyone in a channel can see what you type)

IRC is rather like email or chatting to someone on the phone. You should remain courtious to people who you are "Chatting" to.
